Iontaise Iontas/ Fossil Wonder
A permanent public artwork by Ruth E Lyons, Lavelle co-curated and project managed this commission with Jennie Guy on behalf of Wicklow County Council.
The per cent art commission comprises a family of large-scale sculptures built from granite boulders, clear resin and stainless steel and sited Coláiste Raithín, Bray, Co. Wicklow. They were constructed from granite stone from the Wicklow landscape and pockets of resin housing fragments specific to the student community of Colaiste Raithin.
The work reflects on Thomas Oldham's discovery of what was considered the oldest-ever fossil. The trace fossil, Oldhamia Radiata, was believed to represent the origins of life, a brief moment in time when Bray's head was the focus of geologists worldwide. Photography by Louis Haugh.
